THE MODERNISM

Modernism is a cultural and artistic movement that occurred in Europe in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and, despite occurring in all artistic forms and manifestations, stands out, especially in architectural and decorative arts. It is characterized by the search for new artistic forms and expressions and will respond above all to the demands of the increasingly powerful industrial bourgeoisie, which will seek to differentiate itself from the rest and show its importance. Thus Industrial Revolution underwent a growth in Europe due to the Cities, a fact which is linked to Modernism.

Modernism will happen in many places in Europe and will be given several names: Art Nouveau in France Jugendstil in Germany, Modern Style in England... In Catalonia it will be called Modernism and will be of great importance with authors as well-known and relevant as Lluís Domènech i Montaner, Josep Puig i Cadafalch and, above all, Antoni Gaudi.

In Sant Feliu de Llobregat, in the second half of the 19th century, with the arrival of the railroads and the creation of various textile industries, there will be a very significant population growth. To accommodate a growing population, new streets and homes will be built This will transform an agricultural population into a small industrial city. Some of these homes will be designed and built following the modernist style of the time.
